How Do NFC Business Cards Work?
An NFC business card has a small chip that stores a web link. When a phone with NFC is held within a few centimetres of the card, the phone powers the chip wirelessly, reads the link and opens it in the browser — showing your digital profile. The card needs no battery and the other person needs no app.
What's inside the card
NFC stands for Near Field Communication — the same short-range technology used for contactless payments. The card contains a thin antenna and a tiny chip. The chip holds a small amount of data: in a business card, that's the link to your profile.
The chip is passive. It has no battery; it's powered for a split second by the phone's own NFC field when the two are close together.
What happens during a tap
- The other person unlocks their phone and holds it near your card (usually the top back of the phone).
- Their phone reads the link from the chip.
- A notification or the browser opens your profile.
- They tap "Save contact" to add you to their phone, or call or WhatsApp you directly.
Why your details can change without a new card
The chip stores the link, not your details. Your name, number and everything else live in the online profile the link opens. Edit the profile and the same card shows the new version — which is why an NFC card never needs reprinting.
When NFC doesn't work: the QR code backup
Some phones have NFC turned off, and older phones may not read tags. That's why every Priinteve card also has a QR code: point the camera at it and the same profile opens.
Common Questions
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. iPhone XS and newer read NFC tags automatically when unlocked, and most Android phones do when NFC is switched on. Every card also carries a QR code, so older phones can scan instead of tapping.
Does the other person need an app?
No. Their phone reads the NFC chip (or its camera scans the QR code) and your profile opens in the browser. Nothing to install on either side.
Is an NFC business card safe?
Yes. The chip only holds a link to your public profile — no payment data or passwords — and it can only be read from a few centimetres away.
